Fall Planting Can Result in a Leach Field Repair Being Necessary

Septic Preservation Services know that in the fall many people are out raking leaves, pruning and generally getting their yards ready for winter. What most non gardeners do not realize is that for many tree varieties late August, September and October are also the best months to plant them. In fall, the tree can make new roots without having to feed the leaves. Water requirements are much lower without the leaves on the tree. To us it feels cool in fall, but that is actually the best temperature for root growth. Roots grow best in cool soil. A fall planting allows the tree to grow roots in fall and again early spring before leaves develop. This gives the tree a good chance to lay down a good set of roots before they need to collect water and nutrients for the leaves. Unfortunately when you are planting large shrubs or trees in your yard if you do so on your leach field you can unknowingly create a septic problem. The roots and sometimes weight of plants can actually damage your drain field which means that your septic system is no longer working correctly and you may need a leach field repair. Septic systems do an amazing job of returning liquids to the soil for purification but the whole system needs to be functioning correctly for this to happen. When septic system failure occurs, the conditions they create are dangerous. These can include:

Hazardous sewage surfacing in yard
Health hazards to children and pets
Noxious odors over large areas
Polluted streams and ponds
Sewage back-up in buildings
Contaminated wells
Breeding areas for mosquitoes

The roots combined with heavy machinery being parked on to of the drainfield during construction have both lead to structural collapse of the leach field piping. Septic Repairs Including A Leach Field Repair In Massachusetts

Septic Preservation Services know that property owners with septic systems will not always immediately know when they have a septic problem. A common sign that you may have a septic issue is if you have much greener and healthier grass on your leach field than elsewhere in your yard. While a home owner may be congratulating themselves on their improved gardening skills they may not realise that they need a leach field repair because this is a result of their leach field not being able to process their wastewater as it should and therefore it’s starting to contaminate their yard. The main reason for a leach field to fail is referred to as biological clogging. This is the development of a biomat beneath the leachfield that eventually prevents the liquid or effluent from entering the underlying soil. This biomat is a combination of fine organic solids that have been carried out of the septic tank and the remnants of anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria originate in the human intestinal tract and enter the septic system with the waste products. 95% of all leach field failures are biological. The second primary reason is referred to as a mechanical failure. This could be a structural collapse of the leach field piping or chambers, root intrusion, or fine non-organic materials that are washed down to the bottom of the leach field and seal the soil. Your Leach Field Is An Essential Part Of Your Septic System

Septic Preservation Services are experienced repairing all parts of your septic system. We have found that many property owners who have a septic system are aware that their system has a septic tank but are often unaware of their systems’ leach field, its purpose or its location. This makes it much more likely that they will inadvertently damage it. Although your septic system leach field (also called a drain field or absorption field) generally does not require maintenance, you should adhere to the following rules to protect and prolong its functional life:

  • Do not drive over the absorption field with cars, trucks, or heavy equipment.
  • Do not plant trees or shrubbery in the absorption field area, because the roots can get into the lines and plug them.
  • Do not cover the absorption field with hard surfaces, such as concrete or asphalt. Grass is the best cover, because it will help prevent erosion and help remove excess water.
  • Do divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways, and other areas away from the absorption field.

Today we are providing customers with leach field repairs and replacement. For one customer in Westport MA we are installing a White Knight™ Microbial Inoculator/Generator, an economical, environmentally sound and permanent alternative to leach field replacement. In nature, oxygen-using (aerobic) bacteria in the soil consume non-living organic material. This is the process nature uses to “recycle” wastes. We install the White Knight™ Microbial Inoculator/Generator in the septic tank to create an oxygen rich environment and cultivate an extensive colony of these same soil bacteria. The result is nearly complete consumption of the organic materials entering the septic tank. At the same time, the bacteria are carried into the leach field where they consume the organic material that has accumulated in the underlying soil. The leach field regains and/or maintains is capacity to deliver effluent to the soil for purification. We are also repairing leach fields for customers in Mattapoisett, Taunton and Raynham MA.
