A typical septic system consists of a septic tank and a drainfield. All water runs out of your house from one main drainage pipe into a septic tank which is a buried, water-tight container usually made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene. Its job is to hold the wastewater long enough to allow solids to settle down to the bottom which forms a sludge, while the oil and grease floats to the top as scum. Compartments in the tank and a T-shaped outlet prevent the sludge and scum from leaving the tank and traveling into the drainfield area. The liquid wastewater, or effluent, then exits the tank into the drainfield. Finally the wastewater percolates into the soil, naturally removing harmful bacteria, viruses, and nutrients. Many homes in New England have their own septic system and they are not all way out in the countryside. As more and more property has been built it has not all been connected upto town sewer so many homes that are in towns and cities have their own septic systems. Leach Field Repair in Attleboro MA

Septic Preservation Services has been contacted by a customer in Attleboro MA because they are concerned that their septic system is failing. Your system is failing if one or more of the following conditions exists:

  • All of the drains from the house are slow
  • There is a persistent wet area over the leach field

Your Leach Field Is An Essential Part Of Your Septic System

We have found that many property owners who have a septic system are aware that their system has a septic tank but are often unaware of their systems’ leach field, its purpose or its location. This makes it much more likely that they will inadvertently damage it. Although your septic system leach field (also called a drain field or absorption field) generally does not require maintenance, you should adhere to the following rules to protect and prolong its functional life:

  • Do not drive over the absorption field with cars, trucks, or heavy equipment.
  • Do not plant trees or shrubbery in the absorption field area, because the roots can get into the lines and plug them.
  • Do not cover the absorption field with hard surfaces, such as concrete or asphalt. Grass is the best cover, because it will help prevent erosion and help remove excess water.
  • Do divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways, and other areas away from the absorption field.

Septic Inspections Scheduled In Maine

Septic Preservation Services know that for many homes in Maine that are remote and therefore not on town sewer their property wastewater purification necessarily requires a septic system. All Septic Systems are designed specifically for their own site and have variances which make them unique but most systems are based on the same principles. A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drainfield. Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and later pumped out. After partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. Drainage holes at the bottom of each line allow the wastewater to drain into gravel trenches for temporary storage. This effluent then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified. You system must be maintained and used correctly to ensure that it is doing its job correctly. A failing septic system can create many unpleasant conditions such as:

  • Hazardous sewage surfacing in yard
  • Health hazards to children and pets
  • Noxious orders over large areas
  • Polluted streams and ponds
  • Sewage back-up in buildings

Septic Pumping Is Essential Septic System Maintenance

Regular pumping helps to prevent solids from escaping into your drainfield and clogging the soil. Normally a properly designed septic system has enough space for 3-5 years accumulation of sludge waste. Once sludge reaches this point waste has less time to properly settle before leaving the tank into your leach field. This means that more solid waste will get into your leach field. As this becomes clogged liquid waste will not absorb at the rate which it enters the tank so plumbing can backup and waste will reach the surface.
