Providing Cesspool Services To Ensure That They Continue To Operate Correctly

Septic Preservation Services, in addition to property owners with conventional septic systems also work with many customers who have a cesspool instead. As stated on the Mass Gov website:

“A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. A conventional septic system has a tank where solids can settle and begin to degrade, a distribution box, and a soil absorption system (SAS) that further treats the effluent by removing some of the bacteria, viruses, phosphorus, and nitrogen.”

Although cesspool are now out of date and there are more efficient and environmentally conscious alternatives Massachusetts does not require cesspools to be replaced. They state that:

“Only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).”

We provide cesspool services to customers so that they can ensure that their system continues to operate correctly. Today we have cesspool services scheduled in Bolton, Berlin, Clinton, Sterling, Paxton, Spencer and East Brookfield MA. We do also provide cesspool replacement and have recently done so in Maynard, Dennis and Berkley MA. If Your Property Has A Cesspool Always Use A Company That Has Cesspool Experience In Massachusetts

Septic Preservation Services are doing a cesspool replacement for a customer in Westport MA today. A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds.  Over time, when the drainage area around the leaching pool becomes saturated, additional pools may have to be dug to handle the volume. Cesspools must be treated to avoid harmful chemicals from forming and also to empty the pool which needs to be done regularly. This makes cesspools have high maintenance costs.

In Massachusetts Title 5 does not require Cesspools to be replaced:

“only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).” The Official Website of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs

The Facts About Cesspools

Septic Preservation Services Septic Preservation Services has extensive experience with both septic systems and cesspools. A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds.

A conventional septic system has a tank where solids can settle and begin to degrade, a distribution box, and a soil absorption system (SAS) that further treats the effluent by removing some of the bacteria, viruses, phosphorus, and nitrogen.  Conventional septic systems are now more common, but there are many homes and properties that still have cesspools which are not required to be replaced.  However, cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded.

We are replacing a cesspool for a customer in Stoughton, MA today because they have added 2 bedrooms to their home and cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow. We also have cesspool services in Southborough, Marlborough, Grafton, Holliston, Millbury, and Uxbridge, MA.

If you have a cesspool that needs servicing or replacing please do contact our office at 877-378-4279 or visit www.septicpreservation.com

Pros and Cons of Cesspools

Septic Preservation Services Septic Preservation Services has a septic installation starting today in North Attleboro, MA.  We were contacted by a homeowner who has a cesspool and wants to replace their cesspool and upgrade to a septic system.  People often have their cesspool upgraded because it is failing.  However, it is often wise to consider replacing a cesspool because cesspools are considered substandard systems.  They don’t treat wastewater, they merely dispose of it.  Cesspools concentrate the wastewater in one location, often deep within the ground and in direct contact with groundwater, causing groundwater contamination.  This groundwater flows into drinking water wells and surface waters contributing to adverse public health and environmental impacts.  In contrast, conventional septic systems place the wastewater well above the level of soils saturated by groundwater and they disperse this effluent over a large area, which results in substantial removal of pathogens and other pollutants.  Cesspools which serve only as “overflow” pits from septic tanks are much more efficient than the older systems because they receive much less solid material. However, where there is no septic tank to hold the solids, the cesspool will require much more maintenance.  Over time, when the drainage area around the leaching pool becomes saturated, additional pools may have to be dug to handle the volume. Cesspools generally have larger maintenance costs also in addition to not treating waste as efficiently.  We have extensive experience with septic system installation and have recently completed septic installations in Norton, Fairhaven, Franklin and Lakeville, MA.  If you have questions about septic system installations or cesspool replacement please do contact our office at 877-378-4279 or visit www.septicpreservation.com

Cesspool Replacement and Cesspool Upgrades

Septic Preservation Services Septic Preservation Services has a cesspool replacement scheduled to start today in Norton, MA.  Title 5 does not require that cesspools be replaced, however, if they exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment, they will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303).  Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).  Our customer is selling their property and the cesspool has been found to be showing signs of failure, so as part of their sale they need to upgrade to a conventional septic system.  If you have a cesspool and are concerned that it needs to be replaced or simply wish to upgrade your cesspool, please do contact our office to discuss your options and make an appointment.  You can reach us at 877-378-4279 or visit www.septicpreservation.com
