Septic Repair For A D-Box In Norton MA

Septic Preservation Services has an appointment today for a customer in Norton MA who needs a septic repair because their D-Box (distribution box) is not operating correctly. A D-Box is an essential component of a conventional septic system. As the name suggests it ‘distributes’ in this case wastewater from the septic tank which has already partially treated the wastewater into the leach field. A septic system consists a septic tank and a drainfield which are connected through the D-Box. Wastewater flows from your property to the septic tank. The septic tank treats the wastewater by holding it in the tank long enough for solids and liquids to separate. The wastewater forms three layers inside the tank. Solids lighter than water (such as greases and oils) float to the top forming a layer of scum. Solids heavier than water settle at the bottom of the tank forming a layer of sludge. This leaves a middle layer of partially clarified wastewater. The layers of sludge and scum remain in the septic tank where bacteria work to break the solids down. The sludge and scum that cannot be broken down are retained in the septic tank until the tank is pumped. The layer of clarified liquid flows from the septic tank to the drainfield via the D-Box which uniformly distributes the wastewater into the drainfield. A standard drain field (also known as a leach field, disposal field, or a soil absorption system) is a series of trenches or a bed lined with gravel or course sand and buried one to three feet below the ground surface. Perforated pipes or drain tiles run through the trenches to distribute the wastewater. The drainfield treats the wastewater by allowing it to slowly trickle from the pipes out into the gravel and down through the soil. The gravel and soil act as biological filters. Clearly it is essential that all components of the septic system are working correctly for it to process your waste. Title 5 Inspections Taking Place In Massachusetts

Septic Preservation Services know that in winter when it snows or the weather turns icy sometimes the Title 5 Inspections that we have scheduled may not take place. Whether our inspector or customer can not get to the location of the inspection or the septic system is not accessible or for another reason there is no need for property owners to panic when they need the inspection for a property sale. Massachusetts Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs know that we live in a state where the weather can, and regularly does, effect plans. Therefore it is stated on the Mass Gov Website::

Do You Know What Is Included in a Title 5 Inspection?

Septic Preservation Services have Title 5 Inspection appointments today for customers in Marlborough, Berlin, Bolton, Clinton, Sterling and Northborough MA. Included in a Title 5 Septic Inspection is:

  • General layout of the system components (location of the building sewer, septic tank or cesspool, distribution box and leaching field)
  • Type of use (e.g., house, school, retail space), Title 5 design flow, and whether the facility is presently occupied
  • Analysis of the criteria specified in Title 5 that indicate system failure, and, for large systems, those which indicate threats to public health and the environment
  • Water use records from the previous two years, if available
  • A description of the septic tank, including its condition, approximate age, thickness of grease/scum layer, and other relevant information
  • A characterization of the distribution box and dosing tanks with pumps, if any, such as condition and evidence of solids carryover or backup

Septic Pumping Is Sometimes Required Annually

Septic Preservation Services have septic pumping appointments today in Berlin, Bolton, Clinton, Northborough, Sterling and Maynard MA. All septic systems must be pumped to continue to operate correctly and it is usually recommended that you have your system pumped every 3-5 years depending on a variety of factors including the size of your system and the amount of wastewater that is being processed. We are also pumping a septic system for a property in Sharon MA today that has its septic tank pumped annually. This is because they have, and use, a garbage disposal so their system must be pumped more regularly. In addition to annual pumping making their system work correctly they also don’t need to have their system inspected within two years of their transfer if they sell their home, they have a 3 year time limit. As stated in the Mas Gov website:

“An inspection up to 3 years before the time of transfer is valid if the inspection report includes records demonstrating that the system has been pumped at least once a year during that time.”

It’s May 1st Already And We Are Busy With Septic Repairs

Septic Preservation Services can’t believe that it’s May 1st already. This year seems to be flying by and our technicians are busier than ever. Unfortunately a lot of our call outs are for septic repairs for homeowners who have unknowingly caused their septic system problem. Where possible we try to educate home owners in the best way to use their septic system to try to prevent future problems while also finding the cause of the septic problem and fixing it. A few suggestions to keep your septic system working correctly are:

  • Pumping. Septic tanks generally should be pumped out every three to five years, depending on how regularly the system is used and/or how many people are using it. Regular pumping ensures that solids will not flow from the septic tank into the drainfield.
  • Use less water. Reducing the amount of wastewater entering your on-site sewage system may increase its lifespan. Excessive water use is a main cause of system failure. Use water-saving bathroom and kitchen fixtures (faucets, showers, toilets). Run and drain appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, one at a time. Spread laundry over the entire week and avoid partial loads. Fix all faucet and toilet leaks promptly.
  • Limit garbage disposal use. A garbage disposal adds solids and grease to your system, which could lead to drainfield failure.
  • Direct water from downspouts and roofs away from the drainfield. Additional water from these sources may prevent your drainfield from working properly.
  • Install risers for easier access. Risers from the tank lids to the soil surface make maintenance easier.
  • Don’t use septic tank additives or “miracle” system cleaners. Some of these chemicals can actually harm your system by allowing solids to flow into and clog the drainfield. The chemicals can also contaminate ground and surface water.
  • Don’t dispose of water from hot tubs into your septic system. Large volumes of water are harmful to the system, and the chlorine can destroy important bacteria in the system.
    Don’t flush solid wastes into the system. These include diapers, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, tampons, condoms, and grease.
  • Don’t put strong chemicals, such as cleaning products, down the drain. Household chemicals — such as drain cleaners, paint thinners and floor cleaners — can destroy important bacteria in your septic tank and contaminate ground and surface water. Laundry additives like bleach and fabric softener can also have a negative effect on the bacteria in your tank.
  • Don’t construct patios, carports or use landscape plastic over the drainfield. Grass is the best cover for your septic tank and drainfield. Soil compaction and paving prevent oxygen from getting into the soil. This oxygen is needed by bacteria to break down and treat sewage.
  • Don’t park cars, trucks or heavy machinery on the septic tank and drainfield areas. The weight can lead to crushed or broken pipes and soil compaction. Compacted soils cannot absorb water from the drainfield. A broken underground pipe can lead to an expensive repair.

Cesspool Services and Cesspool Replacements Carried Out

Septic Preservation Services have been contacted by a customer in Northborough MA who require a cesspool replacement. We also have cesspool services scheduled today in Berlin, Hudson, Upton, Grafton and Clinton MA. As stated on Mas Gov:

“A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. A conventional septic system has a tank where solids can settle and begin to degrade, a distribution box, and a soil absorption system (SAS) that further treats the effluent by removing some of the bacteria, viruses, phosphorus, and nitrogen.”

To sell a property you need a Title 5 Inspection to be done. Title 5 does not require that cesspools be replaced however:

“cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant”.
