Septic Preservation Services know that for many homes in Maine that are remote and therefore not on town sewer their property wastewater purification necessarily requires a septic system. All Septic Systems are designed specifically for their own site and have variances which make them unique but most systems are based on the same principles. A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drainfield. Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and later pumped out. After partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. Drainage holes at the bottom of each line allow the wastewater to drain into gravel trenches for temporary storage. This effluent then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified. Your system must be maintained and used correctly to ensure that it is doing its job correctly. A failing septic system can create many unpleasant conditions such as:

Cesspool Services and Cesspool Replacements Carried Out

Septic Preservation Services have been contacted by a customer in Northborough MA who require a cesspool replacement. We also have cesspool services scheduled today in Berlin, Hudson, Upton, Grafton and Clinton MA. As stated on Mas Gov:

“A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. A conventional septic system has a tank where solids can settle and begin to degrade, a distribution box, and a soil absorption system (SAS) that further treats the effluent by removing some of the bacteria, viruses, phosphorus, and nitrogen.”

To sell a property you need a Title 5 Inspection to be done. Title 5 does not require that cesspools be replaced however:

“cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant”.

The Maine DEP’s Overboard Discharge (OBD) Program is responsible for regulating discharges of sanitary and household wastewater generated at residential or commercial locations to streams, rivers, bays, and the ocean. All OBDs must be approved by the DEP through a licensing process. DEP rule requires all mechanical OBD treatment systems to have an operating alarm system; to maintain a current service contract with a licensed service contractor; and to attach a service tag on or near the treatment system that provides the service contractor’s name and the last date of service. All mechanical systems require power, so be sure that power is supplied to the unit and that it is turned on 7 days a week during the season of use. Monthly Safety Meeting In Our Norton Office

Septic Preservation Services had its monthly safety meeting today at its Norton Office with technicians attending from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine. The safety of our staff and customers is of utmost importance and we make sure that we stay ahead of safety training and developments in the industry. For example the meeting covered the Norton Facility Safety Inspection that was carried out last month and established that all Fire Extinguishers were serviced including truck units. We have 4 technicians attending an Excavation Safety Session next month and, like every month, there were a safety topic addressed in the meeting. This month our topic was Ladder Safety which included the selection, Inspection and safe use of ladders. There was also training on Trailer Safety which included securing Loads and Visual Inspection. Our aim at Septic Preservation Services is to ensure that all of our technicians, office staff and customers are safe and that we have the knowledge and equipment to ensure it.
