It’s May 1st Already And We Are Busy With Septic Repairs

Septic Preservation Services can’t believe that it’s May 1st already. This year seems to be flying by and our technicians are busier than ever. Unfortunately a lot of our call outs are for septic repairs for homeowners who have unknowingly caused their septic system problem. Where possible we try to educate home owners in the best way to use their septic system to try to prevent future problems while also finding the cause of the septic problem and fixing it. A few suggestions to keep your septic system working correctly are:

  • Pumping. Septic tanks generally should be pumped out every three to five years, depending on how regularly the system is used and/or how many people are using it. Regular pumping ensures that solids will not flow from the septic tank into the drainfield.
  • Use less water. Reducing the amount of wastewater entering your on-site sewage system may increase its lifespan. Excessive water use is a main cause of system failure. Use water-saving bathroom and kitchen fixtures (faucets, showers, toilets). Run and drain appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, one at a time. Spread laundry over the entire week and avoid partial loads. Fix all faucet and toilet leaks promptly.
  • Limit garbage disposal use. A garbage disposal adds solids and grease to your system, which could lead to drainfield failure.
  • Direct water from downspouts and roofs away from the drainfield. Additional water from these sources may prevent your drainfield from working properly.
  • Install risers for easier access. Risers from the tank lids to the soil surface make maintenance easier.
  • Don’t use septic tank additives or “miracle” system cleaners. Some of these chemicals can actually harm your system by allowing solids to flow into and clog the drainfield. The chemicals can also contaminate ground and surface water.
  • Don’t dispose of water from hot tubs into your septic system. Large volumes of water are harmful to the system, and the chlorine can destroy important bacteria in the system.
    Don’t flush solid wastes into the system. These include diapers, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, tampons, condoms, and grease.
  • Don’t put strong chemicals, such as cleaning products, down the drain. Household chemicals — such as drain cleaners, paint thinners and floor cleaners — can destroy important bacteria in your septic tank and contaminate ground and surface water. Laundry additives like bleach and fabric softener can also have a negative effect on the bacteria in your tank.
  • Don’t construct patios, carports or use landscape plastic over the drainfield. Grass is the best cover for your septic tank and drainfield. Soil compaction and paving prevent oxygen from getting into the soil. This oxygen is needed by bacteria to break down and treat sewage.
  • Don’t park cars, trucks or heavy machinery on the septic tank and drainfield areas. The weight can lead to crushed or broken pipes and soil compaction. Compacted soils cannot absorb water from the drainfield. A broken underground pipe can lead to an expensive repair.

Leach Field Repair in Attleboro MA

Septic Preservation Services has been contacted by a customer in Attleboro MA because they are concerned that their septic system is failing. Your system is failing if one or more of the following conditions exists:

  • All of the drains from the house are slow

Your Leach Field Is An Essential Part Of Your Septic System

We have found that many property owners who have a septic system are aware that their system has a septic tank but are often unaware of their systems’ leach field, its purpose or its location. This makes it much more likely that they will inadvertently damage it. Although your septic system leach field (also called a drain field or absorption field) generally does not require maintenance, you should adhere to the following rules to protect and prolong its functional life:

  • Do not drive over the absorption field with cars, trucks, or heavy equipment.
  • Do not plant trees or shrubbery in the absorption field area, because the roots can get into the lines and plug them.
  • Do not cover the absorption field with hard surfaces, such as concrete or asphalt. Grass is the best cover, because it will help prevent erosion and help remove excess water.
  • Do divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways, and other areas away from the absorption field.

Septic Inspections Scheduled In Maine

Septic Preservation Services know that for many homes in Maine that are remote and therefore not on town sewer their property wastewater purification necessarily requires a septic system. All Septic Systems are designed specifically for their own site and have variances which make them unique but most systems are based on the same principles. A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drainfield. Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and later pumped out. After partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. Drainage holes at the bottom of each line allow the wastewater to drain into gravel trenches for temporary storage. This effluent then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified. You system must be maintained and used correctly to ensure that it is doing its job correctly. A failing septic system can create many unpleasant conditions such as:

  • Hazardous sewage surfacing in yard
  • Health hazards to children and pets
  • Noxious orders over large areas
  • Polluted streams and ponds
  • Sewage back-up in buildings

Leach Field Repair With White Knight System

Septic Preservation Services were contacted by a customer in Acushnet who had noticed sewage smells and damp patches in their backyard so were concerned that they may have a septic problem. Further discussion revealed that they had noticed slow drains and much greener grass in their backyard for a while but had not realized that these are also signs of a septic problem. The reason for their leach field failure is biological clogging. This is the development of a biomat beneath the leachfield that eventually prevents the liquid or effluent from entering the underlying soil. This biomat is a combination of fine organic solids that have been carried out of the septic tank and the remnants of anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria originate in the human intestinal tract and enter the septic system with the waste products. 95% of all leach field failures are biological. We will repair their leach field by installing the White Knight system. The White Knight system creates an aerobic environment within the septic system and provides a large surface area for the growth of a specialized bacterial colony. As the bacteria multiply, they consume the organic material coming into the septic tank. At the same time, a great many of these bacteria are carried into the leach field and begin to consume the organic material that is clogging the soil. As a result, the underlying soil begins to regain its porosity, which in turn allows the effluent to pass through. After installation our client will have to discontinue use of a garbage disposal system, refrain from introducing any harsh chemicals into the septic system, use liquid detergents for washing dishes and clothes, refrain from flushing any and all non-organic products down the drains, refrain from the heavy use of bleach products and refrain from flushing paper towels or wipes down the drains.
