Voluntary Septic Assessments Provide Confidential Information On Your Septic System

Septic Preservation Services conduct many septic inspections for people who are selling or sometimes buying property with a septic system. We also provide septic inspections for Condominium Buildings that are required to have septic inspections every 3 years. We also, however, provide voluntary septic assessments for property owners who are not ‘required’ to have an inspection but choose to have an assessment because they want to know the condition of their septic system. Many property owners are unaware that they have the ability to hire a licensed inspector to perform confidential voluntary septic assessments of their septic systems. These inspections are completed just as they would be according to the Title 5 Inspections required by the State of Massachusetts, but the findings are NOT reported to any other person, municipality or office outside of the homeowner. Once the inspection is complete, the homeowner will receive a thorough report from Septic Preservation Services along with an assessment of the findings and some recommendations on how to properly maintain or repair their septic system. Leach Field Repair in Attleboro MA

Septic Preservation Services has been contacted by a customer in Attleboro MA because they are concerned that their septic system is failing. Your system is failing if one or more of the following conditions exists:

  • All of the drains from the house are slow
  • There is a persistent wet area over the leach field
  • Sewage is surfacing in the area of the septic tank or distribution box
  • There is sewage seeping through the foundation
  • The liquid level in the leach field is at the top of the crushed rock layer, the chambers or other underground structures

In nature, oxygen-using (aerobic) bacteria in the soil consume non-living organic material. This is the process nature uses to “recycle” wastes. The result is nearly complete consumption of the organic materials entering the septic tank. At the same time, the bacteria are carried into the leach field where they consume the organic material that has accumulated in the underlying soil. Septic System Services On Systems Including Singular, FAST and Sand Filter

Septic Preservation Services has been working in this region on septic systems for over 20 years. During this time we have worked with many different types of septic system and therefore gained knowledge and experience working on systems such as Singulair, FAST, Sand Filter, Jet System, Fuji Clean and many others. All septic systems are designed specifically for their own site and have variances which make them unique but most systems are based on the same principles. A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drainfield. Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and later pumped out. After partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. Drainage holes at the bottom of each line allow the wastewater to drain into gravel trenches for temporary storage. This effluent then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified. Like anything in your home your septic system must be maintained to ensure it keeps working correctly. Your Leach Field Is An Essential Part Of Your Septic System

Septic Preservation Services are experienced repairing all parts of your septic system. We have found that many property owners who have a septic system are aware that their system has a septic tank but are often unaware of their systems’ leach field, its purpose or its location. This makes it much more likely that they will inadvertently damage it. Although your septic system leach field (also called a drain field or absorption field) generally does not require maintenance, you should adhere to the following rules to protect and prolong its functional life:

  • Do not drive over the absorption field with cars, trucks, or heavy equipment.
  • Do not plant trees or shrubbery in the absorption field area, because the roots can get into the lines and plug them.
  • Do not cover the absorption field with hard surfaces, such as concrete or asphalt. Grass is the best cover, because it will help prevent erosion and help remove excess water.
  • Do divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways, and other areas away from the absorption field.

Septic Repairs Can Sometimes Be Avoided Following Simple Steps

Septic Preservation Services provide advice to their customers to ensure that they use their septic systems correctly and are therefore less likely to have septic system problems. Very importantly to take good care of your septic systems you should know which items should never be flushed down the drain or toilet. This is because these things can overtax or destroy the biological digestion taking place within the system or clog pumps and pipes.

Take care not to flush the following:

  • hair combings, dental floss, disposable diapers, condoms, gauze bandages, sanitary napkins, tampons
  • coffee grounds, kitty litter, fat, grease, oil, cigarette butts, paper towels
  • chemicals that could contaminate surface and groundwater, such as paints, varnishes, thinners, waste oils, photographic solutions, or pesticides.

Septic Preservation Services suggests everyone makes sure to avoid black cats and ladders on this Friday 13th! Not that we are a superstitious bunch. We know that good luck is often the result of planning and preparation. This is true particularly for your septic system. Following good septic maintenance practices and advice will ensure that you don’t have ‘bad luck’ with your septic system.

Septic System Do’s and Don’ts
Things you should do
DO get your septic tank pumped regularly and have it checked for any cracks or leaks.
DO conserve water whenever possible as a means of reducing the volume of wastewater that will need to be treated and disposed.
DO make repairs to any faucets or toilets that are leaking.
DO make sure that you are only discharging biodegradable wastes into your system.
DO restrict or avoid use of your garbage disposal.
DO take the time to ensure that any down spouts or other surface water is diverted away from your drainfield.
DO keep the cover to your septic tank accessible by installing covers and risers for easier inspections and pumping.
DO have an effluent filter installed to prevent debris from entering your drainfield.
DO add a laundry filter to your washing machine.
DO put kitchen trash into a compost or throw it into the garbage – not down your drains.
Things you should NOT do
DON’T flush products such as tampons, sanitary napkins, condoms, disposable diapers or wipes into your system.
DON’T empty oils or other types of kitchen grease down your drain.
DON’T dump any items that can disrupt the treatment process or contaminate groundwater, such as: paints, oils, thinners, pesticides, poisons or disinfectants.
DON’T build anything over your drainfield or dig in it for any reason.
DON’T plant any landscaping over your drainfield – except grass.
DON’T drive a vehicle over your drainfield or compact the soil in ANY way.
DON’T run purification back flush into the septic tank.

Safety Meeting To Ensure Our Technicians and Customers Are Safe

Septic Preservation Services had its monthly safety meeting today. The safety of our employees and customers is of the utmost importance to us so we ensure that we stay ahead of safety training, safety procedures and that our equipment is safe and our employees know how to use it correctly. Even though it is raining today part of our safety commitment is ensuring that our staff are safe whatever the weather so today our meeting covered heat stress and sun exposure training to ensure that our staff know how to work safely when the sun does show itself. We also focused on trailer safety for open, closed and equipment trailers including correct loading, tie down and visual inspections. We had technicians attend the meeting at our Norton Office and also join remotely from our Biddeford Maine office.
